The establishment of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services signals a positive step in the fight to conserve biodiversity. The IPBES aims to tackle increasing biodiversity loss and degradation of ecosystem services. The IPBES will work alongside existing programs which focus on biodiversity and ecosystem services; they will focus on building knowledge using credible methods for the conservation of biodiversity.

The World Bank has recently called on countries to value their natural ecosystems in order to promote green economic growth. A recent report by the World Bank has highlighted the importance of placing monetary value on ecosystem services in order to ensure that their natural assets are protected, allowing for truly sustainable development.
